For patients diagnosed with spine arthrosis (spondylosis) or lateral lumbar disc bulge; sleep on side with pillow under knees.

If you are diagnosed with slipping vertebrae ( spondylolisthesis) or central disc prolapse, lie on your back with pillows under your upper back and knees, or on a recliner.

Very nice and simple test:

If your back pain improves by bending forward, sleep in a reclining position.

If your back pain improves by bending backward, sleep on your belly with a pillow under your hips.
