Why surgeons use bone grafts in spine fixation surgery?
Spinal Fixation requires the use of metal ( titanium) as screws, plates, or rods.
To complete the fusion process bone grafts are required, bone is harvested from the patient or as a graft from outside the patient's body.
Why use both?
Let us have a look at this graph.
The solid line represents the metal, it is strongest on the day of implantation ( near 100) at — Lt. Side of a graph-, then gets weaker over time till reaching its weakest point around 2 years post-surgery ( red arrow).
The interrupted line represents the bone, it is weakest on the day of implantation ( near 0) at — Lt. Side of a graph-, then gets stronger over time till reaching its strongest point around 2 years post-surgery ( green arrow).
