Why bone grafting as part of spine surgery important?
During spine fixation surgery, the Surgeon used metals - in the form of screws and rods/ plates- to fix the unstable vertebrae.
That needs to be coupled with bone graft for the following reasons:
Graph showing metal strength ( continuous line) and bone graft ( interrupted line) traced over time after spine fusion surgery.
Mental strength is maximal on the day of surgery, then it weakens gradually over time till it nearly does not support the spine by 1.5 ~ 2 years after surgery. We can not allow that to happen otherwise we put the patient in danger.
A solution to this dilemma is to implant bones beside the metal screws. This bone is so weak on the day of surgery but gets stronger over time till it fuses completely with the patient spine by 1.5 years after surgery.
So, bone takes over metal around this time and the patient’s spine is safeguarded.
